Online community for breast cancer patients and their supporters

Hi Everyone,
I am a widow with three adult children, four delightful grand children and a 12 month old west highland white terrier called Maggie. I am also the researcher and PhD student who is preparing to conduct a research project with the cooperation of you, the members of the Purple Boot brigade, Breast Cancer Care of WA and Edith Cowan University.

Your information about your needs for information and support during your breast cancer journey plus that of your supporters, will help me design a closed website for breast cancer patients to interact and share their experiences.

Members of the Purple Boot Brigade, breast cancer patients and their supporters, will be the first people invited to join the new online group.

Once the website has been established (probably 3 months from launching) an online professional will introduced who will provide online support for the members. This support will be provided for a period of 6 months then evaluated to determine whether it is effective and if you are satisfied with it. I will be a member of the community and moderator together with Vanessa Bradshaw from Purple Boot Brigade

In order to do this I would like your assistance through focus groups, surveys and interviews. Research information will also be obtained through your online posts/talk. You can be assured that all of this information will be kept confidential and details regarding the processes will be available to you before the research commences.

I hope you can join me on our journey into the unknown online community territory in order to see if online support and information is of benefit to you and your family.

Kind regards

Cynthia

To Cynthia and all our purple boot soldiers!
This is an AWESOME project being funded by the generous donations of Steel Blue through the Purple Boot Brigade initiative, the Australian Research Council and Edith Cowan University.
We should all lend our support to Cynthia as a community that have come together online to help support breast cancer initiatives such as this.
I really look forward to working with Cynthia and invite you all to get into contact with her either through the site or directly and see how you can get involved.
I will also be working with Cynthia on the technical and promotion side of things and welcome any questions or comments as we keep you up-to-date!

Cheers team!
Ness

Sounds like a wonderful idea Cynthia.
I would love to be able to support you. A site where women who have experienced their bc news and for them to be able to interact with other women who have been in the same situation would be of enormous benefit.
Family and friends are there to talk to, but unless they have suffered through something so - deeply personal - they never really understand.
Also - family would get more of an idea what the 'patient' is going through too. An online support group would keep allow them to keep their anomymity
My father-in-law is in the first stages of dementia - we have contacted a local dementia groupand their information and support has been a blessing, not only to Mum - his wife - but us his children too.

As a member of the Purple Boot Brigade, I applaud your desire to assist others in this way

Hi Cynthia
I am happy to be involved! Any support for women who travel this journey must be of some assistance. Just to know that such a service is available is wonderful news. It has been 2 and a half years for me since THAT day ("D" day - diagnosis) and although I cope much better now there are days where I really need to offload to someone who understands. It seems that when your hair grows back every one around you thinks you are "better now" but the idea of living with cancer doesn't ever go away!
So thank you for recognising a need and trying to offer help to those of us living with breast cancer.

A special discussion board is now set up to include information that everyone wanting to participate in this research may need.
