I"m so glad to see Lisa generously sharing her story! You're a real trooper Lisa. So many people (wrongly) assume breast cancer affects only older women, but you are living proof of how wrong that is! Looking forward to seeing you again soon! Warmes…

Hello Sherryl. I received very good news regarding my pathology. The surgeon said that incredulously (his words) I did not need chemo or radiation therapy. He said he was certainly expecting cancer to be in the lymph nodes in my right arm, which is why they removed them all, but he said to the team's amazement there was none at all. He has suggested I start a course of tamoxifen for the next five years, but that I should do a bit of research myself before making this decision.

Do you know of anyone who has ever tried to reduce oestrogen using natural methods, such as lignan based foods (flaxseed, broccoli, apricots, prunes etc) along with a course of 'natural tamoxifen' (which is a supplement - not sure what it contains except I know one ingredient is black cohash). A naturopath informed me that he had treated several women with natural tamoxifen and one has been clear for over 4 years. I have spoken with 3 women who opted for the natural way ( one had several large grade 3 tumours and is into her 3rd year doing it the natural way post-chemo), but I would like to know if you have had any experience with any one who has treated themselves this way. At the moment I am inclined to opt for the tamoxifen but I am going to do a bit of investigation. The surgeon said there was no hurry for me to start the tamoxifen and to take my time in making the decision.

I am healing really well and have not as yet fallen in a heap, and since the good news re the pathology I don't think that I will. The fear and nerves were not about losing the breast but about the challenge of treatment post op. I feel so lucky and I am full of admiration to all those darlings who bravely endure chemo and radiation.

The reconstruction is going ok. One breast is fine but the other seems to have deflated and is flat as a pancake! I am seeing the surgeon tomorrow. I am not too phased about this though cos it can be fixed.

Regards
Abi

I haven't yet got the hang of this comment thing. I responded to myself instead of to you, so have copied and pasted the following. Hope I've got it right!

Hello Sherryl

Thank you for responding to my request, however I only received your reply today. I was terrified before my op and really felt that I would not get through it with my mind intact, and I am surprised at how calm I have been since I had my breasts removed on Tuesday. It is very painful, and leading my 3 new little pets around (the varivacs) is a bit inconvenient, but all in all I am doing better than I had expected. I actually took off my pjs today and have got myself into some regular clothes, and am about to wash my hair over the sink.

The skin expanders feel like a couple of cement blocks on my chest, and one fits nice and roundly under the breast whilst the other is high and irregular. If I hadnt seen the breast gallery at the Breast Clinic at RPH I would be worried, but I did see a lady with the same thing happening so at this stage I am unconcerned.

I am keeping up with my pain relief treatment, but cant seem to knock the edge off the back pain. I am also doing the gentle exercises prescribed by the physio and managing them quite well. All in all, I am really doing so much better psychologically than I thought I would. I really thought I would be a total mess, ready to be committed to the psych ward. Having friends and family around is a bonus, and although one lady told me to be quarantined for 10 days after the op, I really feel having ppl around me has let me get 'back' to my life far better than I had imagined. Having them with me is worth the risk of getting an infection I think. I would have sunk into despair on day 2 if they were not around.

I get my results from the pathology on November 19, so fingers crossed all will be well, and if not I think I will cross that hurdle when I come to it.

Thanks again Sherryl for your response. When I feel a little more able to chat I will give you a buzz.

Regards, Abi
