Breast Cancer is the most common invasive
cancer diagnosed in females in Australia. Around one in eight women
are diagnosed with breast cancer each year.
The Breast Cancer Awareness – Learning Resource
for Secondary Schools Package is an initiative of the Breast Cancer
Foundation of Western Australia (BCFWA) to increase awareness of
breast cancer. The BCFWA provides personalised support and care to
Western Australians affected by breast cancer.
The learning resource includes a print resource, accompanied by
a CD-ROM and DVD.
-
The print resource includes student
activities which utilise a variety of teaching strategies with
facilitator guides. These are presented in the context of Health
and Physical Education in the Early Adolescence phase.
-
The CD-ROM replicates the print resource in
Microsoft® Word® format which teachers are able to modify and print
for classroom use.
-
The DVD comprises 4 interviews of young people
affected by breast cancer, either through their mother being
diagnosed or themselves. (32 minutes duration)
Students will develop an understanding of breast
cancer; skills to find support; skills to understand the emotional
states of others; and ways to care for someone with breast
cancer.

accompany the Teachers' Manual.
WARNING: The DVD portrays real life stories of
young people’s experience of breast cancer in their families. The
Breast Cancer Foundation of Western Australia advises that this may
cause distress for some viewers.
