In December 2008 the Purple Boot Brigade and Breast Cancer Foundation of Western Australia (BCFWA) launched their first national online education program through the ‘Breast iQ’ quiz.
We are so pleased to announce that at the end of the first promotion, over 2,500 people from Australia and around the globe have already taking the quiz.
Whilst it is encouraging to see so many people are interested to learn more, the results from the quiz are already proving to be a useful resource in developing future educational materials. The team are now planning to work with education researchers and health professionals to look deeper into how this quiz was answered to inform our future efforts.
A high percentage of quiz takers still have misconceptions about breast cancer with 3 out of 4 people believing family history is the biggest risk for developing breast cancer, however statistics show that 8 out of 9 women diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history that they know of.
Other myths are proving to still be prevalent in our community, such as the use of deodorants and trauma to the breast causing breast cancer.
The quiz is showing us how important it is to be highlighting the ‘be breast aware’ message across our community, with less than a quarter of the quiz takers having discussed their own breast health with a health professional.
Please stay tuned for more updates and the latest on how to stay breast aware!
